THE SKIING AND ALTA BADIA

The Dolomites are the largest ski area in the world on one pass, yet that is just the beginning of the many wonderful things that makes this area so unique.

The fascinating thing about the area of Alta Badia and the skiing is that it is not a purpose built ski resort. It doesn’t become a ghost town after the snow has melted and the skiers have all gone home. Instead it is valuable and productive farm land first and then a ski resort second. This means that many of the traditional farming activities and day to day village life takes place all year round. It is not unusual to ski down a slope and pass a barn full of cows about to be milked or see a farmer loading hay onto an old fashion farming sled.

Many of the local farming community of Alta Badia double as both farmers and then lift operators, groomers, ski instructors or restaurateurs. That means that whilst you are out skiing and enjoying yourself, in one way or another you will cross paths with the people that truly belong here and have the Dolomites embedded in their hearts.

The 6 villages of the Alta Badia region are Colfosco, Corvara, La Villa, San Cassiano, Pedraces and La Val. The last village La Val, is not situated within the ski slope area. The town of Pedraces is the lowest lying village at 1,324m with the highest groomed slope in the Alta Badia mountain range being at the top of the Vallon ski run at 2,400m. Within the region of Alta Badia alone, there is 130km’s of groomed ski runs.

Alta Badia is part of the Dolomiti Superski Pass which gives you access to all of the neighbouring valleys which are linked either by ski or short transfer rides. This makes the Dolomites the largest ski area in the world on one pass. There are 12 resorts, 450 lift facilities, and 1,220 km’s of ski runs, so in theory, that means you can ski from Melbourne to Port Macquarie on your ski holiday. For those who have already enjoyed skiing in the Dolomites click on the Dolomiti Superski Link below and enter your WTP number, which is shown on your ski pass, to see exactly where you skied and how many km’s you have covered.

How awesome is that!!!!!!!!!!!

The skiing in Alta Badia is perfectly suited to intermediate skiers. But in saying that, there are excellent black runs on offer with the most famous being the Gran Risa World Cup Run, which comes alive with dare devil ski racers in December. The area is graded as:

• 30% Beginner Runs
• 60% Intermediate Runs
• 10% Advanced Runs

Most of the ski runs in Alta Badia are below the tree line area. This means that the skiing and lift rides are simply spectacular with thousands of snow laden pine trees on either side of you. But the real advantage comes when the weather turns and the trees provide plenty of protection from the wind as well as giving skiers good directional bearings during rare foggy days.

Having 5 villages located within the Alta Badia skiing region means that cruising from village to village is a highlight. Each village has it’s own personality and unique quality. Nowhere in the world will you get such an intimate feeling in such a gigantic area.

Alta Badia borders the valleys of Val Gardena and Arabba. Both of these valleys also offer exciting terrain. It is through these valleys that the famous Sellaronda ski tour passes. With the massive Sella Mountain as the centre piece you can ski either clockwise or anticlockwise from Alta Badia passing through, Arabba, Val di Fassa and Val Gardena before retuning to Alta Badia. It really is a great day and scenic extravaganza.

Because there are so many things to see and do in the Dolomites, we at Skiare aim to show you the highlights, improve your skiing as well as having lots of fun and sharing some great local secrets. A great deal of care and daily planning is always taken by each of our highly qualified ski instructors so that every day is a fantastic one.
